ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS’ DAY – Secretary’s Day

The name of this professional celebration day has changed and evolved over the past few decades. The two new terms in use today are: “Administrative Professionals” and “Executive Administrators (or Admins)”. The two names sometimes mean different roles and responsibilities in different companies and organizations. Both are broader terms, that encompass more positions than the original “Secretary” role.

Far from just possessing the stereotypical “interpersonal and communications skills”, admins are responsible for office duties ranging from expert computer troubleshooting to managing new hires.

The role of secretaries and executive assistants have been recognized since the end of World War II, when industry boomed in the early 1950’s. Jobs were also plentiful, as women were called upon to take on the role as assistants to the new captains of industry. Today, their role has become increasingly important to day-to-day operations of companies worldwide.

Although the number of men who take on admin and secretarial positions continues to rise, women continue to dominate the field at 85% (female) to 15% (male).

Administrative Professionals’ Day is often celebrated with gifts to one’s assistant, such as flowers, gift certificates, gift baskets, candy or lunch.  Honor your assistant by sharing your gratitude on social media using #AdminProfessionalsDay.

It’s a very important celebration in USA, Canada and lots of countries of Europe and even Latin America. Not a high season in floral business, but still there is rise in flower export-import industry.
